About
GEAP
The Gender, Environment, Agriculture and Participation (GEAP) program has a
strong track record of relevant programming, bringing unique learning experiences
to UF students and faculty that are not available in other venues. Over the
years, it has provided excellent opportunities and unique multidisciplinary
approaches to complement the UF/IFAS teaching, research, and extension missions.
The
Objectives
Promote
awareness and recognition of the interconnectedness of gender
issues, development, the environment and the use of participatory
methodologies.
Provide a multidisciplinary venue throughout UF for collaboration
on teaching, research, and outreach programs and initiatives.
Link with other programs that focus on sociocultural, environmental,
and gender issues.
Create partnerships with national and international institutions
and organizations to expand faculty and student research and
extension, collaboration, and funding opportunities.
The
History of GEAP
GEAP started as the Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) program in the
1980s in UF/IFAS International Programs. In the 1990s, student and faculty
interests expanded to include environmental issues and participatory approaches,
which led to the renaming of WIAD to GEAP in 1993. The program was co-directed
by Drs. Hildebrand and Sandra Russo. In fall 2003, GEAP found a new administrative
and programmatic home in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication
(AEC) under the leadership of Dr. Marta Hartmann.
The GEAP Graduate Assistant Position
The position offers an excellent opportunity for a graduate student to build
a repertoire of practical skills that will aid his/her academic and professional
development.
